Hearty chicken soup will give you enough stamina to

outlast the sweltering heat this summer

Samgyetang is a representative summer dish made with young chick boiled with ginseng, jujube and glutinous rice. It¡¯s known for its ability to provide an energy boost to those exhausted from the summer heat. Following are some famous samgyetang places in and around Busan.

Daegung Samgyetang (Jungang-dong)

This eatery has carved a niche for itself since 1983 on the SC Firstbank street in Jungang-dong, boasting some menu items that taste just as they did way back when it was first founded. In fact, Daegung Samgyetang is famous for dishes that have remained unchanged over the years.

The most important aspect of a samgyetang restaurant lies in selecting just the right chickens for the dish. Daegung Samgyetang uses Kitosan chickens raised on herbal medicine feed, which makes the meat soft and extra tasty.

While locals have been coming in droves for years, the restaurant is also attracting an increasing number of foreigners. The chicken is served in a broth that is prepared separately, giving the dish a distinct taste. The samgyetang runs 8,000 won ($7), the Samgye chicken is 10,000 won and the fried chicken is 10,000 won.

Take the train to Jungang-dong Station and it¡¯s a short seven-minute walk from there. Opening hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. (051-463-9444)

Dongnae Samgyetang

The Dongnae area is perhaps best known for its pajeon, as there are literally dozens of places selling the pancake-based meal near the district office.

But it¡¯s also home to a popular samgyetang joint.

The 1970s decor transports diners back in time, while the food leaves them begging for more. Simplicity is the key here. The menu, for instance, has just two dishes: samgyetang (11,000 won) and herbal samgyetang. Although the price tag is about 2,000 won to 3,000 won higher than other samgyetang places in the area, it¡¯s worth the splurge to try the dish here. The restaurant is located between the Dongnae District Office and the Dongkwang Bookstore. Opening hours are from noon to 10 p.m. (051-553-8514)

Nampo Samgyetang

When the temperature rises, locals all head out to grab some samgyetang as a way to beat the heat. And while restaurants serving the dish abound, finding a really good one can be a bit of a chore. Many locals think Nampo Samgyetang is up there with the best. This 50-year-old restaurant boasts samgyetang made with glutinous rice, a thick yellow broth and some of the best chicken in town. Don¡¯t take our word for it: check out the long line in front of the restaurant around lunchtime. In fact, visitors often have to wait 15 minutes or so to get a seat. The samgyetang costs 11,000 won and the fried chicken is 11,000 won. The restaurant is located near Nampo-dong Station on line No. 1. A five-minute walk from the PIFF Square to a small alley. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (051-245-5075)

Haeundae Somunnan Samgyetang

This place - located across from the Haeundae Novotel Ambassador Hotel - is often packed with people in the summer looking to boost their immune systems by sampling some samgyetang.. The menu includes Korean samgyetang and herbal medicine samgyetang. The herbal medicine samgyetang is made with 20 kinds of herbal medicine including polypara and ginseng, all boiled together for 14 hours.

The sour pickle and spicy fresh vegetable (geotjeoli) option is a great side dish for those with small appetites in the sweltering heat. The Korean samgyetang is 8,000 won, while the herbal medicine samgyetang is 10,000 won. Opening hours are from 9.a.m to 10 p.m. (051-741-4545)
