Busan''s beaches and scenic areas draw all the attention during the day. But the city takes on a decidedly different - and overwhelmingly beautiful - feel at night, as various sights you might not have noticed when the sun was out take on a whole new dynamic in the dark.

Local tourism officials are now capitalizing on this unique aspect of Busan, developing tours and promoting sights revolving around nighttime sights. The city recently created a list of the top areas to see at night, hoping to give visitors another view of Busan. A shot of Marine City at night from the Westin Chosun Hotel.

First on the list is Bongsudae Peak on Mt. Hwangnyeong, which easily connects with the nearby Gwangan Bridge (or Diamond Bridge), Gwangalli Beach and the Mt. Geumnyeon Youth Institute.

The second is the Mt. Yongdu Park Observatory, where you can see the skyline and the sea at the same time. The area is also close to the Jagalchi Market and Gwangbok-dong Youth Street.

Rounding out the list is Mt. Cheonma- which is near Amnam Park, Songdo Beach, Namhang Bridge, Haemaru which connects Haeundae Beach  and Dalmaji Hill and Mt. Ami Observatory, which boasts beautiful views of the Nakdong River. Upon further consultation with district offices and other organizations, the city will add additional nighttime spots to the list.

There will also be a taxi service starting soon that offers stops at various night spots. The service - which is scheduled to start in October - will include visits to Mt. Hwangnyeong, Jungang Park and Mt. Gudeok, which are a bit difficult for visitors to access on their own. The fare will run 20,000 won ($16) for 4 persons per hour. Visitors can also take a seven-seat van for 25,000 won per hour.

The "Greenway Night Tour" - which includes night hiking and moonlit sightseeing - and the "Cruise Plus Tour Package"  featuring a Tiffany Cruise and visits to Moontan Road, Haemaru, the Mt. Yongdu Park Observatory and Jagalchi Market - will be offered as part of the service.

In addition, there will be a product focusing on areas in west Busan such as Mt. Ami Observatory, Namhang Bridge, Jagalchi Market, Songdo Beach and Amnam Park, while the eastern tour includes stops at Bongsudae Peak on Mt. Hwangnyeong, Gwangalli Beach, Moontan Road, Haemaru and Haeundae Beach.

1. Haemaru

This is a two-story observatory built in a traditional style. It is located about 500 meters from the Dalmaji Haewol Pavilion on the Gijang side. From the observatory you can see Oryuk Islets, Gwangan Bridge and Haeundae Dalmaji Road. The sun rising from the ocean is another awesome sight from Haemaru. The soft, white-sand shore with the rising sun in the background is a picture-perfect way to start the day.

How to get there: Bus No. 39, 100, 139, 141, 180 or 1003. Get off at the Dalmaji entrance and walk 20 to 30 minutes.

2. Bongsudae Peak on Mt. Hwangnyeong

Just 15 minutes by foot from Gwangalli Beach, Bongsudae Peak on Mt. Hwangnyeong boasts a fantastic view.

This is a very famous area for people who like to hike at night. From the middle of the mountain you can see all of downtown Busan and the sea as well, combining the best of human achievement with the powerful force of nature.

To the east you can view Haeundae and Gwangan Bridge, while a simple turn of your head to the west presents views of Gaegeum and Jurye. To the north is Seomyeon and Dongnae, and to the south you are greeted by panoramic views of Yeongdo and Busan Port.

How to get there: Subway line No. 2 Mt. Geumnyeon Station. Walk 20 to 30 minutes.

3. Mt. Yongdu Park Observatory

This imposing tower stretches 120 meters into the sky and was built 69 meters above ground. It offers sweeping views of the city that you can''t find anywhere else. While ascending to the top via the elevator, you can see the splendid lights of the city complimenting the twinkling night sky.

How to get there: Subway line No. 1, Nampo-dong Station or Jungang-dong Station. Walk 20 to 30 minutes.

4. Mt. Cheonma

The rock observatory here has a wide-open view of Busan Port and the city as well. There is no other place in town where you can see both historical and modern glimpses of Busan all at once.

While this is a great spot at night, it''s also worth a visit during the day. On clear mornings or afternoons when the sun is shining, you can even see Tsushima as well as Geojedo, Eulsukdo, Gadeokdo, Yeongdo, Busan Port, Jangsan and Haeundae from the observatory.

How to get there: Subway line No. 1, Toseong-dong Station. Walk towards Nambumin-dong. From Ami-dong bus station use bus No. 190 or 134 or take mini-bus 2 or 2-1.

5. Mt. Ami Observatory

From Mt. Ami Observatory - which is currently under construction - visitors will be able to comfortably see the sunset, the lilies along the Nakdong River and thousands of migratory birds. It will be a much more relaxing affair, as the current observatory has only a few chairs and there are no convenience facilities. The new three-story, 10,254-square-meter observatory will open next April across from the Molundae Cathedral in Dadae-dong, Saha District.

How to get there: Subway line No. 1, Jagalchi Market Station. Transfer to bus No. 87.
